A Touch of Green

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the best ways to add a touch of green in a room is to buy a plant. Foliage adds texture, shape and variegated color to a space. Studies indicate that plants can reduce stress and many, such as English ivy, the Boston fern and the peace lily, can help improve air quality. Unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with "green thumbs," and keeping houseplants and indoor trees alive can become a daunting task. A low maintenance way to bring the outdoors in is to decorate with botanical prints, as well as wall coverings and fabrics featuring ferns, palms and other leaf motifs.   </span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first few images that appear below were created by Becky Davis of <a href="http://bdbotanicals.com/" target="_blank">Becky Davis Botanicals</a> whose work is featured in the October - November edition of <a href="http://gardenandgun.com/" target="_blank"><i>Garden and Gun</i></a>. Ms. Davis wears waders and uses a canoe to gather the plants she dries and has framed. He reigned for 72 years - a "golden century" during which France was the most powerful political and cultural force in Europe. Louis XIV enjoyed absolute sovereignty, which he believed was a God-given right. He moved his court from Paris to the Chateau de Versailles in 1682 - a strategy that allowed him to keep watch over his nobles and prevent them from rebelling against him. Chinoiserie

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">According to last Saturday's <i><a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390444100404577643553858386614.html?KEYWORDS=say+ni+hao+to+chinois">Wall Street Journal</a></i>, chinoiserie is popular again. <i>Architectural Digest</i> seems to agree. Its October 2012 edition features retired designer Valentino Garavini's <a href="http://www.architecturaldigest.com/celebrity-homes/2012/valentino-garavani-paris-chateau-pigeonnier-article">Chateau de Wideville</a>, which is filled with every type of Chinese decorative item imaginable. The same magazine depicts <a href="http://www.architecturaldigest.com/celebrity-homes/2012/robert-duffy-marc-jacobs-new-york-townhouse-article">Robert Duffy's Greenwich Village townhouse</a>, which is home to a hand-painted chinoiserie mural, Regency lacquer chinoiserie cabinets and 19th-century Chinese porcelain. <i>Chinoiserie </i>is a French term meaning "a style of decoration reflecting Chinese motifs." According to the <a href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/chinoiserie">Merriam-Webster dictionary</a>, the first known usage of the word was in 1883, but interest in Chinese objects developed in the 17th and 18th centuries due to trade expansion to the East. The Western world began appropriating Asian motifs in fanciful ways using blue and white pottery, gilding and lacquered surfaces. An early example of a chinoiserie-inspired interior was the Trianon de Porcelaine, which was built for Louis XIV at Versailles (1670 - 1671). This structure no longer exists, but chinoiserie was the rage until the 19th century, when railroad and steamship travel introduced Westerners to other exotic locales.
