My July 1st post - "Stars and Stripes Part One" - featured rooms with stars. Today I offer a celebration of stripes - from the girly pink of a Ruthie Sommers bedroom to the edgy glamour of a Kelly Wearstler space. Candy-colored cabana bands or gentlemanly stripes. Enjoy lines of color in the bathroom, on a barn - even adorning a wooden ice cream spoon. The choice is yours . . .

"At her house on Long Island Sound, Susan Harris outfitted a guest room with two striped patterns that blend rather than fight. The bed skirt, coverlet, and pillowcases are made of SeaCloth’s Boardwalk cotton-linen, while the yellow-and-white-striped carpet was made by Country Swedish."

"A grand blue-and-white striped antique dhurrie anchors the living room of a Hamptons house decorated by Victoria Hagan. Its palette is echoed throughout the room to create a chic but restful scheme. Fun fact: This room reportedly helped to inspire Diane Keaton’s living room in the 2003 movie Something’s Gotta Give."

"Russian designer Dmitry Velikovsky mixed modern and traditional pieces in this Moscow pied-à-terre to create what his client described as 'a very simple space with a very complicated inside.' In the entrance hall, a 17th-century painting by Hendrik Mommers is offset by the blue-and-white striped wallcovering and equally bold lamps."

" 'If English country house is your look, it doesn’t matter if you have it in England or in New York or in the tropics,' said Mario Buatta. Reinforcing that idea, the designer brought a decidedly European sensibility to a residence in the Philippines. The tented dressing room, with its striped walls displaying vintage Vanity Fair portraits, has an intimate, old-world feel."

" 'I don't like to cook and stare at a wall,' [Tobi] Tobin says. So she added a shelf and created a mix of interesting shapes and reflections — but no color: "Neutrals are what hold this vignette together." The vertical lines of Ralph Lauren Home's Newberry Stripe wallpaper make the low ceiling feel higher."

"Red-and-white wallpaper energizes the center hall of designer Kristiina Ratia’s Connecticut residence. Dark contrasting accents, such as the vintage lamps, ebonized frame, and gleaming floor, pump up the visual volume."

"The sunroom is tented like a pleasure boat - 'a fun way to make it feel full of happiness.' The convocation of blue-and-white stripes is distinctively American; it includes the mitered Sunbrella canopy and a Dash and Albert rug. [Amanda] Lindroth found the 1960s swivel chairs, hooded wicker chair, and whimsical metal palm tree in south Florida."

"Store-bought vanilla ice cream looks extra special when served with striped wooden spoons. Patriotic Spoons, $8 for 20. sucreshop.com via House Beautiful."
One of my favorite Fourth of July memories is making ice cream at my grandparents' house using an old, wooden hand-crank ice cream maker. So yummy!
Happy Fourth!
