Swimming on a summer's day - the scent of sunscreen, practicing laps before a meet, children splashing, diving, shouting. The sun sets. The mood changes. Fireflies flash. Katydids call (Listen to Stormy Night of the Katydids)

"In 1996 AD 100 architect Robert A.M. Stern created this French-inspired estate in Starwood, a gated community on scenic Red Mountain [Colorado]. Granite blocks in subtle hues sheathe the house's stately exterior. Inside, exquisite details abound, among them intricate moldings and wood paneling."

" 'It's my own piece of Los Angeles,' designer Thomas Pheasant says of the rear garden and pool area of his classically inspired contemporary residence in D.C. Although Pheasant created the poolhouse with a Palladian facade, he used stucco for the walls and Spanish-style tiles for the roof. 'It's very un-Washington.' "

"A modernist assemblage of glass and concrete planes, this abode was created in 2007 by local architect Imaad Rahmouni, a protege of Philippe Starck. A dramatic structure partially frames the rectilinear volumes while shielding the outdoor living areas from the desert sun. The verdant five-acre grounds  boasts two pools, the smaller of which borders the secluded three-bedroom guesthouse. In a bit if whimsy, a six-foot-diameter hole was left in the canopy to accommodate a towering palm tree."

"Fashion designer and Las Vegas native Randolph Duke collaborated with decorator Tobi Tobin on the finishes and furnishings of his hillside Los Angeles residence. For the pool, they decided to channel a bit of Duke's hometown sparkle with silver-leafed tiles. The deck offers expansive views that stretch from Hollywood to the Pacific Ocean."

" 'We created a calm and holistic environment,' designer Chandu Chhada says of Shanti Ananda Maurice, a beachfront hotel and spa on Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, which he collaborated on with architect Jean-Marc Eynaud. Three swimming pools are nestled among the lushly landscaped gardens. Pictured: One of the swimming pools at dusk. 'The landscape is part of the building,' says Eynaud. 'The quietness is in line with the spiritual atmosphere of the spa.' "
